How We Work
Psychological Therapy with ChangeUp Psychology
We offer evidence-based psychological therapy for adults and adolescents experiencing anxiety, low mood, trauma, stress, sleep difficulties, insomnia, burnout, relationship challenges, and other emotional or behavioural concerns.
We also work with individuals who may not identify with a specific mental health condition, but who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or ready for change.
Free 15-Minute Consultation
We offer a complimentary 15-minute phone consultation so you can ask questions, understand how we work, and decide whether we’re the right fit for you. The therapeutic relationship matters – and finding the right psychologist is an important first step.
Initial Consultation
Your first appointment is typically a 60- or 90-minute assessment session.
In this session, we explore:
- The difficulties or challenges you’d like support with
- Any goals or skills you’d like to develop
- Relevant background factors
- What meaningful change would look like for you
We may ask you to complete evidence-based questionnaires to help clarify patterns and guide treatment planning. These outcome measures also allow us to track progress throughout therapy and ensure the work is effective.
Following this assessment, we develop a personalised plan – including recommended frequency, likely duration, and the therapeutic approach best suited to your needs.
Your Psychological Formulation
A central part of our work is developing a shared understanding of your difficulties. In psychology, this is known as a formulation.
Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, formulation helps us understand:
- How your current challenges developed
- What maintains them
- Your strengths and protective factors
- The wider context of your life, relationships, and experiences
This process allows therapy to be focused and purposeful. Your formulation is collaborative, evidence-based, and unique to you. As therapy progresses, it may evolve as our understanding deepens.
Our Process
Exploring Formulation
Clinical Psychologists place formulation at the heart of what they do. This is our process.
1. Exploration
This is the information gathering part of the process. This allows you space to safely explore thoughts, events, relationships, feelings, behaviours that could be causing you distress.
2. Analysis
We will draw upon psychological theory to make sense of what is going on.
3. Hypothesis
We will form an idea of what has caused, maintained or is contributing to the problem. The formulation will help us to determine the type of intervention that will best fit your needs.
4. Reflection
Your formulation will continue to evolve over the course of your therapy and we may reformulate as our understanding grows.
Online Therapy Across the UK and Beyond
We provide online therapy to clients across the UK and internationally.
Research shows that online psychological therapy can be as effective as in-person work when delivered with structure and care. Working online allows us to provide continuity, accessibility, and specialist expertise wherever you are based.
Will Therapy Work For Me?
Starting therapy can feel overwhelming. With many types of therapy and practitioners available, it can be difficult to know where to begin.
We believe the therapeutic relationship is one of the strongest predictors of positive outcomes. If you feel able to work openly and collaboratively with your psychologist, therapy is far more likely to be effective.
Our aim is not simply to provide therapy – but to provide therapy that leads to meaningful, sustainable change.
